href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Heavy_bomber\">heavy bomber<\/a> used by the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/United_States_Air_Force\">United States Air Force<\/a>. It has been nicknamed the &#8220;Bone&#8221; (from &#8220;B-One&#8221;).<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Rockwell_B-1_Lancer#cite_note-Jenkins_p67-3\">[2]<\/a><\/sup><sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Rockwell_B-1_Lancer#cite_note-5\">[3]<\/a><\/sup> As of 2026, it is one of the U.S. Air Force&#8217;s three <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Strategic_bomber\">strategic bombers<\/a>, along with the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/B-2_Spirit\">B-2 Spirit<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/B-52_Stratofortress\">B-52 Stratofortress<\/a>. It carries up to a 75,000-pound (34,000&nbsp;kg) <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Payload\">payload<\/a>.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Rockwell_B-1_Lancer#cite_note-6\">[4]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The B-1 was first envisioned in the 1960s as a bomber that would combine the Mach 2 speed of the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/B-58_Hustler\">B-58 Hustler<\/a> with the range and payload of the B-52, ultimately replacing both. After a long series of studies, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/North_American_Rockwell\">North American Rockwell<\/a> (subsequently renamed <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Rockwell_International\">Rockwell International<\/a>, B-1 division, later acquired by <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Boeing\">Boeing<\/a>) won the design contest for what emerged as the B-1A. Prototypes of this version could fly <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mach_number\">Mach<\/a> 2.2 at high altitude and long distances and at Mach 0.85 at very low altitudes. The program was canceled in 1977 due to its high cost, the introduction of the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/AGM-86_ALCM\">AGM-86<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cruise_missile\">cruise missile<\/a> that flew the same basic speed and distance, and early work on the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Northrop_B-2_Spirit\">B-2 stealth bomber<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The program was restarted in 1981, largely as an interim measure due to delays in the B-2 stealth bomber program. The B-1A design was altered, reducing top speed to Mach 1.25 at high altitude, increasing low-altitude speed to Mach 0.92, extensively improving electronic components, and upgrading the airframe to carry more fuel and weapons. Named the B-1B, deliveries of the new variant began in 1985; the plane formally entered service with <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Strategic_Air_Command\">Strategic Air Command<\/a> (SAC) as a nuclear bomber the following year.
