The <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Twinjet\">twin-engine<\/a> airliner was developed for the 100-seat market and originally marketed by <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/McDonnell_Douglas\">McDonnell Douglas<\/a> in the early 1990s as the <strong>McDonnell Douglas MD-95<\/strong> until the company merged with Boeing in August 1997. It was a shortened derivative of McDonnell Douglas\u2019 successful airliner, the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/MD-80\">MD-80<\/a>, and part of the company&#8217;s broader <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/McDonnell_Douglas_DC-9\">DC-9<\/a> family. Capable of seating up to 134 passengers, the 717 has a design <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Range_(aircraft)\">range<\/a> of 2,060 <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nautical_mile\">nautical miles<\/a> [nmi] (3,820&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Kilometre\">km<\/a>; 2,370&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mile\">mi<\/a>). It is powered by two <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Rolls-Royce_BR715#BR715\">Rolls-Royce BR715<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Turbofan\">turbofan<\/a> engines mounted at the rear of the fuselage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The first order for the airliner was placed with McDonnell Douglas in October 1995 by <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/ValuJet_Airlines\">ValuJet Airlines<\/a> (later <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/AirTran_Airways\">AirTran Airways<\/a>). With the 1997 merger taking place prior to production, the airliner entered service in 1999 as the <em>Boeing 717<\/em>. Production of the type ceased in May 2006 after 155 were delivered, with 99 examples remaining in service as of November 2024.
