On 4 November 1981, the aircraft was launched with ATR, as a <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Joint_venture\">joint venture<\/a> between French <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/A%C3%A9rospatiale\">A\u00e9rospatiale<\/a> (now part of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Airbus\">Airbus<\/a>) and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Aeritalia\">Aeritalia<\/a> (now <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Leonardo_S.p.A.\">Leonardo S.p.A.<\/a>). The ATR 42-300 performed its <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Maiden_flight\">maiden flight<\/a> on 16 August 1984 and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Type_certification\">type certification<\/a> was granted during September 1985. Launch customer <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Air_Littoral\">Air Littoral<\/a> operated its first revenue-earning flight in December of that year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/High-wing\">high-wing<\/a> airliner is powered by two <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Turboprop\">turboprop<\/a> engines, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pratt_&amp;_Whitney_Canada_PW120\">Pratt &amp; Whitney Canada PW120s<\/a>. The number &#8220;42&#8221; in its name is derived from the aircraft&#8217;s original standard seating capacity of 42 passengers. Later variants are upgraded with new <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Avionics\">avionics<\/a>, a <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Glass_cockpit\">glass cockpit<\/a>, and newer engine versions.
